Jeff van Steenbergen is the Co-Founder and Managing Partner of Azimuth Capital Management. Azimuth is advancing a differentiated impact energy transition investment strategy focused on low carbon fuels, resources to support electrification, and low carbon electricity production and storage. The Azimuth V Energy Evolution fund program targets opportunities in North America, Europe and Japan. The Firm has principal offices in Mountain View, California and Calgary, Alberta. Azimuth achieved peak AUM of $5.8 billion and currently manages three funds and an active LP co invest program for leading university endowments, industrial / strategics, pension funds, insurance companies and certain European families. As well, Azimuth has established an in-house development company platform to advance unique energy transition strategies with its team and create new companies.

Prior to jointly establishing the Firm, he was co-head of North American Energy with JP Morgan. Jeff has been active in the North American and international energy sector for 40+ years and has a wide range of experience in energy transition, technology, infrastructure development, and oil and gas as a private equity investor, investment banker, and in operations and major project development planning roles with ExxonMobil and in field operations with Schlumberger.

Jeff has been an investment professional for 30+ years and has broad experience building differentiated businesses and in private equity, venture capital, capital markets, mergers, restructurings and corporate finance. He also has 11 years of energy sector operating experience in North America, Asia and Western Europe, including eight years in frontier offshore drilling operations. While at ExxonMobil Jeff was part of a small group that had a first response role in respect of major oil & gas well control incidents around the world. Over his career, Jeff has worked across the Americas, Europe, Asia and Africa.His education includes a Bachelor of Applied Science (Honours) in Civil Engineering from Queen’s University in Kingston and an MBA in International Business and Finance from Dalhousie University in Halifax. Jeff also attended six Executive Programs at Stanford, INSEAD and Harvard focused on strategy, corporate governance and corporate finance. He holds a US Coast Guard Master’s License (Captain) for Mobile Offshore Drilling Units and is a professional engineer registered in the Province of Nova Scotia.

Jeff currently represents Azimuth on the boards of Mountain View Clean Energy, H Cycle, Enoflex, Monolith, Steelhead LNG and ACM LNG. He is an experienced corporate director and over time has served on over 20 US, European and Canadian public and private company boards and five investment committees. Jeff has specific experience with complex corporate restructurings and working through a range of challenging corporate governance situations.

As well, Jeff is a member of the Board of Governors of the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity. He and his wife Kim have been involved with and supported the Banff Centre for many years. Kim and Jeff also support two uniquely talented Canadian performing artists who have achieved wide international recognition. Kim and Jeff have three children and six grandchildren – all living in Calgary. Jeff’s interests include being close as possible to oceans and mountains. He is a dedicated expert ocean kayaker and also enjoys back country skiing and cycling.
