Howard is an Operating Partner to Azimuth. He is a senior E&P executive with more than 40 years of broad international, operating and board experience, underpinned by a strong technical background.

From 2001 to 2010 Howard was a Senior Vice President with British Petroleum (“BP”) responsible for setting the Subsurface functional direction and oversight of BP’s 2,500 engineers, geoscientists and petrophysicists.  During that period he also directed the R&D program, was responsible for BP’s oil & gas reserves and provided technical approval of M&A activity.  Previously, he held a variety of senior leadership roles for BP in North America, the UK, Russia, Africa and the Gulf of Mexico.  Howard has also worked a number of engineering assignments in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and the UAE while employed by Schlumberger in the 1970’s.

His education includes a Masters of Science in Mechanical Engineering from MIT and a Bachelors of Engineering from the University of Sheffield.  Howard also attended the Wharton Business School’s Advanced Management Program.  In 2008, Howard was granted an Honorary Doctor of Engineering degree from Herriot Watt University in Scotland.

Howard serves on Azimuth’s Independent Advisory Board and is on the boards of Azimuth’s Corex Resources, Connaught and Rathlin UK.  He is an independent director on the Board of Ovintiv (formerly Encana) and has served on a number of private E&P boards.  Previously, from 1997 to 2008, he chaired the Industry Advisory Board for the Institute of Petroleum Engineering in Edinburgh.

Howard is an enthusiast for the outdoors with mountaineering and trail running at the top of the list.  He recently finished climbing all 58 of Colorado’s peaks higher than 14,000ft and is well on track to finish his 100th marathon/ultramarathon before his 70th birthday.  After that he is thinking of taking up biking or even golf.
